SEO 102 – Technical SEO
We are now moving to a more technical SEO after the understanding of the basic of Search Engine. Technical SEO is a really important for your SEO strategy. The reason being is because if the website is not structured correctly – the search engine will have a problem indexing your website properly
There are multiple aspects to the technical SEO that will influence how your site indexed, and we will explain each points one by one below
HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure):
Adding a security certificate has become the most important things to do when building the website. The reason being is because most browsers now display a ‘not secure’ message when users visit the sites that are no secure (this will be really bad especially an e-commerce website). Also, it is important to be on HTTPS so your website will get a full referral data in Google Analytics – meaning you get more details information about your customers
Note: all of our affiliates are automatically get the certificate added onto their website when the website is live under their domain (you can see the green lock right before your domain)
website sitemaps:
There are 2 ways search engine send spiders to crawl and index the content of your website.
The first / primary one is follow the internal links on your pages that allows the spiders to move from page to page and discover your content (i.e. from homepage you have a link to business cards page)
Tips : need to make sure the link on the website is organised, well structured and easy to navigate.
The second way is from XML sitemap – this would be the behind the scene list of all the URLs on your website. When you start with the new site or working on your SEO, you should log into your Search Console and submit your sitemap and indexed (see below link of how to generate your sitemap)

Tips: once you have indexed, make sure the indexed page submitted shows about the right amount of the pages on your website that should be indexed.
Page URLs:
To start with we need to understand about the components of URL.
1. Protocol – this is going to be http or https – depending on the website have the security certificate added or not. Then usually followed by ://
2. Subdomain – in most cases it is simply www. However on larger site separate sections can live under a separate custom subdomains (i.e. shop. , online. ,etc..)
Note: the search engines looks at subdomains as separate entities from the main URL
3. Domain name – the custom domain name you have purchased for your website.
Tips : it would be beneficial for your to have a domain name that includes your important keyword (i.e. samedayprinting)
4. Top Level Domain – this is what follows after your domain name such as .com, .com.au, .net, .co, .org
5. Last one will be the ‘Slug’ , it can include a sub-folders or simply a page address at the root of the site (it’s an actual address for each of the page of the domain). e.g. https://editandprint.com.au/blog
Page URL is an important part of SEO, that’s why you have to make sure that the keyword you are using for your page is focused on your target (audience, product, area,etc..)
Tips: better to make the URLs unique and not too long, when you are using multiple keyword it is best to always use hyphens better than underscore. Avoid using the same keyword more than once.
example: https://editandprint.com.au/australia-cheap-printing
EditandPrint Tips : you have the ability to control your product URLS both on your product and IBS products (category level, or product level). Not only that, you also have control over the URLs on each contents of your website.
Important : when you are optimising your URL by changing the keyword, you may be at risk of losing value as if there are any other sites on the internet linking to the old URL, users who click it will land on 404 page does not exist and think the website is broken (and will be bad for your website health).
In this situations, you want to set up URL redirects. Therefore, it will let the browsers and the search engine knows that page (with the old URL) has been moved to a new URL. Please find below training article how to re-direct the URL.
